Impact Harrisburg’s grant to the Camp Curtin YMCA has enabled much needed and long overdue capital improvements to this vital community asset. For a number of years, the Y’s indoor swimming pool lay idle, empty and in increasing disrepair. In fact, the swimming pool “room” remained closed and locked. However, rather than looking to restore the pool, the Y elected to “repurpose” the entire room—transforming it into a multi-purpose athletic, exercise and social space. The swimming pool was filled in with stone, covered with concrete and a rubberized surface. Structural repairs were made to the exterior walls and windows, and new bathrooms were constructed.
The improvements made possible through Impact Harrisburg funding created a large, well-designed space usable for programs and activities, expanding the organization’s total area by a third and increasing local participation by nearly 100 persons with new program offerings. The new “Impact Room” also serves as a multi-functional facility, and is income producing as rental space for local activities, generating substantial incremental revenue for the organization on an annual basis.
